Method: Ladder of Inference

The Ladder of Inference, developed by Chris Argyris, helps us understand how quickly we can jump to conclusions, often without realising it. It shows how we start with raw data or an experience, then select certain details, add meaning, make assumptions, draw conclusions, and finally take action, all in a matter of seconds. The problem is, we often climb that ladder based on our past experiences or biases, not necessarily the full picture.

As an emerging leader, being aware of the Ladder of Inference is a game-changer. It encourages you to pause, check your thinking, and ask: What am I assuming here? or What else could be true? This kind of reflective thinking helps prevent misunderstandings, reduces conflict, and fosters more thoughtful, inclusive decision-making. It’s a great tool for slowing things down just enough to lead with clarity and intention.
