This discussion paper, commissioned by the Department of Industry, Science and Resources (DISR) and released in February 2025, begins an examination of R&D systems in Australia. The review aims to address challenges in research commercialisation while harnessing emerging opportunities in fields like clean energy, advanced manufacturing, and First Nations knowledge systems. There is a recognition of Australia’s robust foundational research system but an admission that we lag behind comparable nations in overall R&D investment and experimental development.
