The 2025 Basin Plan Evaluation

Event Date 11 Aug 2025
The 2025 Basin Plan Evaluation comes 13 years since the Basin Plan was introduced to secure the long-term health of the Murray–Darling Basin. It is the most thorough report card for tracking the progress, achievements, and shortcomings of the Basin Plan to date. The Evaluation finds that the Plan has recovered over 2,000 GL of water for the environment, and is showing signs of ecological improvement, including positive responses in wetlands and lakes. However, full implementation remains incomplete, with further work required on water recovery, delivery projects, and adapting to climate challenges. The Evaluation also highlights the need to better support First Nations peoples, whose communities have not yet seen tangible benefits from the Plan. These Evaluation is a key milestone in the Basin Plan Review process, which is due to deliver its final report in late-2026. The Review will guide the next phase of reforms and policy to ensure the Basin’s rivers, wetlands, and aquifers remain healthy for future generations.
