Method: 5 Levels of Leadership

John Maxwell’s 5 Levels of Leadership is a helpful roadmap for understanding how leaders grow and influence others over time. It starts at Level 1: Position, where people follow you because they have to – think job titles or formal roles. As you develop, you move through Permission (people follow because they want to), Production (because you get results), People Development (because you invest in them), and finally, Pinnacle, where your influence is built on who you are and the legacy you’ve created.

For emerging leaders, this model is a great reminder that leadership isn’t just about authority or expertise; it’s about relationships, results, and growing others. The higher you go, the more your focus shifts from what you can do to how you can help others succeed. It’s not a quick climb, but being intentional about each level can help you build lasting impact and lead with authenticity and purpose.
