The Three Horizons model, developed by Anthony Hodgson, Andrew Curry, and Graham Leicester, is a simple but powerful tool for thinking about change over time. It helps us look at the present (Horizon 1), imagine future possibilities (Horizon 3), and recognise the innovative ideas already emerging (Horizon 2) that could bridge the gap. Rather than predicting the future, it helps us explore different futures and consider how we can shape them. It’s especially useful in complex environments where things are shifting quickly and linear thinking isn’t enough.
For emerging leaders, the Three Horizons offers a fresh way to think strategically and lead adaptively. It encourages us to honour what’s working now while also seeing where it may no longer serve us—and to actively nurture the seeds of a more regenerative, equitable future. It invites curiosity, foresight, and courage. In a world full of uncertainty, this framework helps leaders hold both present responsibilities and future possibilities with clarity and vision.
