Launch of the Mildura Hub marks new era for regional research and innovation

news Published 16 Dec 2024

The One Basin CRC has officially launched its Mildura Hub, a pivotal initiative to drive research, collaboration, and economic growth in the Murray-Darling Basin. The hub, housed in the Mallee Regional Innovation Centre (MRIC), is set to become a cornerstone for addressing critical water management challenges and fostering innovation in agriculture and sustainability.

Peter Forbes, Mildura Hub Manager, highlighted the regional impact of the hub, noting its contribution to the local economy and workforce.

“In just 10 months, four people have relocated to Mildura to work at the hub, and we expect that number to peak at 13. The researchers that have come to the hub are highly skilled individuals bringing new perspectives and in-demand expertise to our region,” he said.

The Mildura Hub also aims to ensure the basin’s future leaders understand the unique challenges and opportunities of the region. “By encouraging 50 PhD candidates and other researchers to work within the Murray–Darling Basin, over a decade, we’re investing in the skills and innovation needed for future productivity growth,” Forbes added.

Celebrating the launch: Uncle Mike Gilby, acting CEO of the First People of the Millewa-Mallee Aboriginal Corporation; Rebecca Wells, CEO of the Mallee Regional Innovation Centre; Martin Hawson, CEO of the Mildura Rural City Council; and Peter Forbes, One Basin CRC Mildura Hub Manager.

Community and strategic partnerships

The hub is situated within the Mallee Regional Innovation Centre (MRIC) a joint venture between La Trobe University, the University of Melbourne, and SuniTAFE.

MRIC’s role as a node for the Victorian Drought Hub and its involvement in cutting-edge initiatives like hydrogen technology further amplify the hub’s potential for driving transformative research.

Mildura Mayor Cr Helen Healy celebrated the hub’s establishment, emphasising its alignment with the city’s growing prominence in agricultural productivity.

“Mildura has long been a leader in innovation, and the One Basin CRC’s investment here reflects our importance as a research and development hub,” she said.

A launch with purpose

The launch event, held at Powerhouse Place on December 10, brought together key stakeholders, including researchers, local leaders, and industry representatives.

Highlights included discussions on industry-led PhD opportunities, a poster exhibition showcasing ongoing CRC research, and networking sessions with regional and academic partners.

The One Basin CRC Mildura Hub is more than a research facility—it’s a catalyst for local innovation, sustainability, and economic resilience.

As Peter Forbes aptly noted, “If we are near the limits of productivity growth through increased water access, the next step is investing in people and innovation. That’s where the Mildura Hub will make its mark.”
