Cultural Sensitivity Training
Best Practice Engagement
The One Basin CRC has adopted the University of Sydney’s Cultural Sensitivity Training, ensuring all staff, Board members, and PhD candidates are enrolled. Systems have been established to monitor accreditation across project teams and maintain accountability.
The National Centre for Cultural Competence (NCCC) at the University of Sydney offers a rigorously developed suite of online modules designed to advance cultural competence across a broad range of professional and institutional contexts. These modules cultivate critical self-reflection, foster cultural awareness, and equip participants with the skills and strategies necessary to navigate complex cultural landscapes. Collectively, they contribute to the creation of more inclusive, respectful, and equitable workplaces and communities.

The Journey of Self-Discovery module invites participants to examine their own cultural identities, values, and biases within broader social and historical frameworks. It encourages resilience and self-awareness in intercultural interactions.
What Do We Mean by Cultural Competence? provides a conceptual foundation for understanding cultural competence as a dynamic and lifelong process. It centres self-reflection as a critical tool for interrogating assumptions and developing more culturally attuned perspectives.
Racism Runs Deep engages with the systemic nature of racism, offering practical strategies to challenge discriminatory practices and foster anti-racist environments. It underscores the role of cultural competence in dismantling structural inequalities.
Know Your World. See My World emphasises perspective-taking and empathetic engagement, guiding participants in applying cultural competence through everyday actions and relationship-building.
Aboriginal Self-Determination in Sydney explores the histories and contemporary realities of Aboriginal communities, with a particular focus on Redfern as a site of cultural strength and political agency. This module deepens understanding of Aboriginal self-determination and is especially pertinent for those working alongside Indigenous communities.
Together, these modules offer a comprehensive and transformative framework for cultural capability development at individual, team, and organisational levels. They support the cultivation of inclusive practice by grounding learning in critical theory, lived experience, and actionable strategies.
We highly recommend this program to all partners, and organisations looking for a place to start with their professional development on this topic. More information is available here https://www.sydney.edu.au/nccc/education-and-training/modules.html
